Sunday 1st August marks Yorkshire Day. A day of celebrating the glory of God's Own Country itself! But, what does make Yorkshire, and in particular the West of Yorkshire, such a great place to live?
Let’s have a look at some of the key points that make West Yorkshire so desirable…
The cosmopolitan cities
West Yorkshire is home to two bustling cities: Leeds and Bradford, which have the same hustle and buzz as any big city down south. There are plenty of shops, department stores, restaurants, bars and clubs – to suit all ages and tastes.
Leeds is also home to three internationally recognised universities and many large organisations choose to have their head offices here, including Asda, Jet2, Tetley’s, BT, Yorkshire Bank and First Direct.
And the best bit is that even the big cities are completely surrounded by natural beauty!
Amazing days out
West Yorkshire is home to many attractions, which means that you will never be short of a day trip at the weekend.
From the Royal Armouries Museum, to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Science and Media Museum, there is so much to choose from whatever the weather.
There is an indoor ski centre for those who love the slopes and plenty of superb parks and green spaces for picnics and dog walking.
World-class food and drink
Interesting fact - there is no other county in England (outside of London), which holds as many Michelin-starred restaurants as Yorkshire does. One of these, the Black Swan country pub in Oldstead, has even recently been named the best restaurant in the world! The restaurant scene in Leeds is phenomenal, with countless places you will want to eat your way around.
And, what better way to compliment an award-winning meal than with a traditional pint of Yorkshire ale? There is certainly no shortage of that in Yorkshire with a number of historic and contemporary breweries residing here. Tea is also serious business here in Yorkshire – there’s really no surprise it’s Yorkshire’s number one export!
Beautiful properties
From breath-taking apartments in the centre of buzzing Leeds to the quaint rural cottages in Sandal, a few miles outside of Wakefield, there are plenty of beautiful properties waiting to be discovered.
The most fantastic properties are located in the suburbs of Leeds, such as Alwoodley, Roundhay, Headingley and Chapel Allerton. These are very popular areas for families and professionals, and offer plenty of green space and access to nearby golf courses and top-rated schools.
The friendly locals
Many people moving from the south to West Yorkshire are astounded by the friendliness of the locals. The friendliest in the land some might say!
One thing is for sure, the Yorkshire folk will make you feel welcome when you arrive and be sure for some social invites coming through your letter box anytime soon.
The proximity to the coast
When the sun shines, it’s great to live in West Yorkshire. There are many great beaches located under two hour’s drive from Leeds City Centre.
You could make a trip to Robin Hood’s Bay or Whitby, which are among our favourites. Otherwise Filey, Bridlington and Saltburn are also popular spots to secure a spot of paddling and some great fish and chips.
The Yorkshire Dales
Nothing is more exhilarating that a walk in the Yorkshire Dales. With breath-taking views and plenty of short walk ideas, you will never be short of a new route.
Kids will love the tree climbing, the tunnels, the bridges and beams when you follow the Welly Walk at Bolton Abbey from the Stepping Stones to the Cavendish Pavilion.
Stunning viaducts
And one final thing that makes Yorkshire stand out, particularly for architecture lovers, is the viaducts.
All over Yorkshire you can see magnificent bridges, aqueducts and railway viaducts. It brings amazing culture to the county and you could say it’s what draws the place together.
There is even a West Yorkshire group called the Railway Ramblers who organise walks for people of ages and abilities who are interested in exploring disused railway lines and bridges.
